SUMMER 2015
My new novel “Something To Hide” has just been published and I’ve been loitering in the newsagents, furtively leafing through the papers to see if there are any reviews. The Times liked it “as long as you don’t mind old ladies shagging”. If you want to know what it’s about, apart from that, look at my previous posting for a description.
It’s always a weird time, when a book is launched into the world, but I should have got used to it by now. The nicest part so far has been being Rob Cowan’s guest on Radio 3’s Essential Classics show, all through one week. It was blissful, sitting in a studio nattering about myself and then hearing my favourite pieces of music. Most of them, I realized, were painfully sad slow movements of string quartets; I hope nobody broke down in tears.
I’m talking about my new book at various festivals – Wilderness in August; Guernsey and Henley in September; Crickhowell, Manchester, Guildford, Uxbridge, Frinton and Chester in October…if you google them you’ll find the programmes. Meanwhile I’m adapting “Heartbreak Hotel” for ITV and hopefully also “In The Dark” and indeed the latest, “Something To Hide” – in this case, as a movie.
I’m also hoping to adapt one of Celia Fremlin’s thrillers. If you haven’t heard of her, just read one – you’ll thank me for it. Her books have recently been re-issued and she’s one of my very favourite writers – they’re domestic suspense mysteries, and extremely funny, extremely scary, and totally addictive.
